Myopia Control

Myopia control describes a treatment strategy taken by an optometrist to slow the progression of nearsightedness in children. This is important to help reduce the risks of vision threatening complications associated with high myopia. As the degree of myopia increases, the odds ratio of a number of ocular diseases increases, sometimes dramatically. These complications include, but are not limited to, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and blindness.

Children who have participated in these treatments have shown up to a 50% reduction in nearsightedness as compared to those children who have not. There are four primary categories of myopia control treatments: atropine eye drops, multifocal contact lenses, multifocal eyeglasses and orthokeratology (ortho-k).

Each method offers different benefits to those suffering from myopia. Our experienced doctors will determine the best treatment for you or your child based on individual needs.
